In 2023 Bill Elms, Jon Fellowes and Gary Edward Jones of Something About Productions commissioned me to create the key artwork and visual identity for Something About George, The George Harrison Story. This musical biopic tribute explores George Harrison’s life, songwriting and spiritual journey. The show has become one of the most successful biographical theatre productions on the UK touring circuit.
The main challenge was how to depict George on the artwork. An archival photograph was both expensive and complicated by copyright restrictions. I recommended creating an original illustration instead, giving the producers full ownership and creative control. For the direction I wanted something bright, colourful and optimistic, capturing the spirit of Here Comes the Sun while also reflecting the psychedelic energy of the era. I worked from a composite of several reference images rather than replicating any single photograph and drew particular inspiration from Milton Glaser’s iconic Bob Dylan poster, especially in the way colour was applied to the hair and line work. The typography was chosen to evoke the 1970s, the period when George produced some of his most personal and poignant solo work.
The resulting illustration became the centrepiece of a cohesive campaign that has travelled with the show across multiple extensive UK tours. Its vibrant and distinctive style has helped give the production a strong and instantly recognisable identity that feels both respectful and celebratory. The success of Something About George directly led to the creation of two further shows in the series, Something About Simon and Something About Lennon, expanding the brand into a growing collection of biographical productions.
It was a pleasure to develop a visual solution that solved a practical problem while creating something that genuinely captured the spirit of George Harrison and the era he helped define.
